China vows to ordain bishops without Vatican's OK

Beijing (ENI)- In a move likely to aggravate tensions with the Vatican, China's state-run Catholic church announced on June 23 that it may soon ordain more than 40 bishops without the approval of Pope Benedict XVI. According to the official Xinhua news agency, a spokesman for the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association (CPCA) said the church "faces an urgent task" of choosing bishops for more than 40 dioceses, and planned to do so "without delay."

Church as a Verb

In other words, “church” has never really been a noun for me. Church has always been a verb.  Which is why it’s been difficult for me to get too focused on trying to fix this wayward denomination of ours, or spend much time trying to find the perfect, orthodox, evangelical, but-still-values-women-elders, denomination (partly because it doesn’t exist). It feels like trying to perfect church as a noun, when it really works much better as a verb.click here for full article

My Word: The Presbyterian squabble

I saw an ad in Sunday's Orlando Sentinel taken by some members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who raise questions about the direction of our denomination. Recently, a majority of presbyteries, regional governing bodies of elders and ministers, agreed to amend the constitution of our church to remove explicit language about sexual behavior outside of marriage with more inclusive language about appropriate character for those who are ordained as church leaders.

Thirty years ago, his doctoral dissertation was titled, "Presbyterian Pluralism: Competition in a Protestant House."  The vote on the nFOG stands in support of the very message he was writing then.  The Van Winkle Professor of Sociology at Centre College now reflects on the significance of the vote.
