Norway's churches at center of country's efforts to heal after attacks

Trondheim,  Norway (ENI) A Norwegian bishop addressing the recent bombing and shooting attacks in his country said Norway has "countered this insane terrorism by demonstrating love and solidarity."

On the afternoon of Sept. 22, 2001, Carolyn wrote O God, Our Words Cannot Express,” a hymn that was used by many churches on that evening and in the days that followed.  It was published in the Presbyterian Outlook at the time, and was mentioned in USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, lots of magazines and was on national PBS-TV twice in the USA and the BBC-TV in the United Kingdom.

In a time when ministry and outreach to college students is in decline, the Presbyterian Student Center Foundation, known as PresHouse, is thriving on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. However, its tax-exempt status has been revoked, and the ministry could soon be shuttered.

On Tuesday, May 10, a vote in the presbytery of the Twin Cities area tipped the balanced in a 30-year debate about ordination standards in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), presumably allowing gays and lesbians to become pastors, elders, and deacons in gay-affirming congregations. I use the word “presumably” intentionally. I don’t believe the debate has ended.

I think people are leaving. I know that there are people in my church who are considering it. What bothers them the most is the departure from viewing Scripture as authoritative and instead viewing Scripture as merely guidelines. We might as well replace Scripture with the Pirates’ Code. Remember the movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean”?
